Plasterwork is a profession which has been in existence for many centuries. To say precisely plasterwork originated when the first concrete building was built. The person who does plasterwork is called as plasterer. The plasterers are the people who create a plaster over the ceilings and inside facing walls. This job was more of an art than a profession in ancient times. The plasterers used to design the interiors occasionally in the historical ages, but now the plasterers are just plasterers who are employed to do plastering works and to form layers over the walls.

Personal qualities to become a plasterer:

The plastering profession is more of an art as mentioned before. The person willing to pursue the job as a plasterer should have certain qualities to become a master at his art. 

The qualities are as follows:
  • The primary quality of a plasterer is to stay physically fit. The reason to stay fit is because of the nature of the job. The person should be able to hold the tools for a long period of time and have to work by standing over the ladder for many hours.
  • The plasterers should be aware of the safety measures as the job will be risky some times. The person has to prepare himself to withstand all type of risks and physical endurance.
  • The person who wants to become a plasterer needs to have basic physical standard as per the demand of the job. The person needs to be average height and not weigh more than the average index as they have to climb the ropes and ladders sometimes.
 

Plastering tools

Plasterers use various tools to improve the quality of the plastering work. Some of them are listed below:
  • Hawk: Hawk is a tool which has a metal plate attached with the holding poll at the core of it to hold the tool with minimal effort. This tool is used to apply the plaster evenly over the wall.
  • Trowel: Trowel is a tool which is used primarily while plastering. This tool is used to make the plaster flat and to make them stick on the surface of the wall. The trowel is similar to hawk but it has a rectangular edge surface of metal plate on the primary region.
  • Mud pan: Mud pan is an alternative for the hawk. It can be utilized only by the people who are new to plastering. The mud pan can be used easily but using it will make the entire progression of work very slow.
  • Sandpaper: Sandpaper is otherwise known as sponge that is used to correct the uneven surface of the wall after plastering. The sandpaper is used to remove the uneven surface quickly from the wall.
  • Utility knife: Utility knife is nothing but a scissor or pair of blades which is used to partition the edge of the gaps over the wall. These gaps are formed when any modifications like pitching nails over the wall had been done.
  • Jointing knife: Jointing knife is used by the plasterers to define the edge or curve at the end of the wall. This tool is used especially while plastering the wall near the door or window.
  • Step ladder: Step ladder is nothing but the movable tiny ladder which is used to reach the higher section of the wall and ceiling if needed to do.
  • Buckets:  Buckets are used to hold water or to hold the tools, the water inside the bucket is to clean the tools and also it can be filled with any requirements like liquid plasters.
