Marble Stone and Its Characteristics

Marble stone is a type of a rock. Among the wide range of rocks present on earth marble stone belongs to the type called metamorphic rock. Marble stone can be found abundantly over the earth’s surface. Marble stone is nothing but a result of pressurized and heated limestone. It is composed of several oxides as well as other elements. Marble stone is a kind of soft rock. These stones can react even to dilute acid.

Classification of marble stones:

Marble stone is available all over the world. They can be classified based on the geographical area where they are available and the texture and appearance. 

The types are as follows:

Sangemarmar:
Sangemarmar is a white marble. These are found in the northern part of India especially in the state of Rajasthan. These stones were used to construct Taj Mahal which is one of the seven wonder of the world. This type of stone is also called as Makrana marble.

Silvenec Marble:
These types of marbles are found in the village called silvenec located in Czechoslovakia or otherwise known as Republic of Czech. These stones have some stripes over it which is also known as marble veins.

Emperor Marble:
This type of marble is composed of grey patches with white color gradient. This type of marble stone is generally found in Spain.

Swedish Green Marble:
As the name denotes, this type of marble is found in Sweden. The color texture of this marble is green and the stripes over the green colored marble makes it cool looking among all the types of marbles. It is harder than the usual type of marble. Paris opera is one of the monuments built by using this type of marble.

Parian Marble:
Parian marble is one of the rarest marble which was used to carve sculptures during the period of Greek Civilization. This type of marble is partially transparent and has no veins over it. The color of this marble is white. Parian marble was employed in the construction of the roof of the Parthenon. These marbles were found during the age of 6th century B.C. better known as a pre historical period.

Application of Marble Stones:
The major applicable area of marble stone is the field of construction. Many architectural monuments and awe inspiring buildings have marble placed in it. From the historical age to the present technologically advanced age marble stones are occupying a major area in the field of construction. Listed below are some of the notable Architectural buildings where the marble stone was majorly used.

Taj Mahal stands top on the list as it is created completely by marble. White marbles were employed majorly to build this architectural marvel. This building is located in Agra city which is very nearer to New Delhi, capital city of India.

The supreme courthouse of America is built using the Vermont marble. This building is composed of many other types of marbles as well but Vermont marble is very notable as they are used on the exterior part of the building. This building is located exactly at Washington D.C. which is the capital city of America.

Another finest example is the Washington monument. This monument is constructed using various types of marbles during different periods. Thirty percent of construction is done using marbles from Texas the central five percent was built using Sheffield marble and the rest of the building is constructed using Cockeysville marble.

Marbles are also used to carve sculptures as the stone is pure and translucent to some extent. Many sculptures were carved using marbles especially in the Greek age. The marble stone has the capability to glow after polishing it to some extent. Hence it makes the sculpture to withstand a long time and still remain fresh.
